Here we show you how to download the Steam app on your Mac, giving you access to the Steam store and allowing you to play the games. Steam can also be enjoyed on newer Apple silicon Macs although knowing how to install Rosetta on Mac will ensure you can enjoy titles created for Intel chips. Have fun!

1. Launch a browser on your Mac and navigate to store.steampowered.com (opens in new tab). Now click Install Steam in the top right-hand corner.

3. Check your downloads folder or click the download icon in your browser (in Safari, it's top right). Double click on steam.dmg to launch.

And there you have it. As well as having the Steam app on your Mac, you are also able to quickly find games that have been developed for the Mac. My gaming PC (which runs on Windows) has very limited bandwith: I can connect to the internet, but cannot download a game. However I do have a macbook with access to a network with unlimited bandwith. Is there any way I can download Steam games (for Windows) on my mac and then transfer them to the Windows PC?

Let's look at Half-Life 2 and other Source games. They have lots of *.gcf files inside the Steam\steamapps folder. Those files contain all the multimedia assets (levels, audio, textures, 3D models...), and such data is identical to both Mac and Win versions. Thus, you can safely copy such files from your Mac Steam to your Windows Steam, saving you a few gigabytes of downloads. Then, the Windows Steam will still download Windows-only files, but they are quite small, maybe less then 100MB.

However, if you want to download a Windows-only game, then you might need to run the Windows version of Steam. You may achieve that using one of the many virtualization options (VMware, VirtualBox, Parallels), or even try your luck running Steam under Wine (but that might be too buggy).

I'm not sure, but you might be able to do a back up of the games on the Mac and then transfer them to the PC. Obviously the executables are different between the Mac and PC, so I'm hesitant to suggest this. The sure fire way would be to use boot camp or parallels on the Mac to download the Windows versions, then back everything up (in the menu, Steam->Backup and Restore Games...) and transfer them via external harddrive.

3. After you click "Install Steam," you'll be taken to a new page, where you can download Steam. Click "Install Steam" and a file named "SteamSetup.exe" or "steam.dmg" (depending on whether you're using a PC or Mac, respectively) will begin downloading.

In the folder that opens, scroll to find the Steam folder, and delete everything in there except /steamapps. That directory is where your games live, and keeping that folder preserves the installs.

Just make sure you have a Bluetooth controller, a supported browser, and adequate network support.

The first thing you'll need to do is download and install the software, but depending on your installation of macOS, that could be a little complicated. If you're running 10.14 or earlier, you'll need PlayOnMac 4.3.3, anything newer requires version 4.4.3. If you're not sure which version of macOS you're running, click the Apple logo in the top left of your screen and then select About This Mac. This will present you with your version number and name.

With the installer downloaded, it's simply a case of mounting the .dmg file, then copying the PlayOnMac application to your applications folder. Now you have two options to get Steam installed. Firstly, you can install Steam directly from the Install components menu as you did with the core fonts. However, this does sometimes result in an MD5 error. If this happens to you, download the regular Steam installed exe, go to Miscellaneous and click Run a Windows Executable (.exe) file in this virtual drive. Now just select the Steam installer you downloaded and run it like you normally would.

The final step if you use the manual installation method is to go to General on your drive and select Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive. Then select steam.exe, hit Next, name the shortcut, and hit Next one last time. Once that's done, hit Cancel to finish.

There are one or two final important things you'll need to do to get games installed. First, if you encounter a steamwebhelper.exe error that keeps popping up, go back to Install components and install HackSteam. You can safely ignore any other errors like VulcanDriver by clicking cancel or closing the window when it comes up. This shouldn't stop you from using the service.
